I'm glad this article was published. As a CFI, I have been annoyed with everyone telling me how much safer glass cockpits are for years. I have always thought (and seen) students getting complacent that rely on the glass panels too much. They don't understand that when things go wrong, they need to be extremely proficient with steam gauges, especially since those backup ones are in horrible spots; some that require you to have your head down. I couldn't imagine a worse position to be in during IMC. If you're not prepared and current with those procedures, it's a recipe for disaster.

Training is they key. Pilots should learn the basics of steam gauges during their initial training and advance to flat screens. Pilots at Embry Riddle are learning to fly Diamond Stars which practically fly themselves. This is not a good foundation for pilotage.
